Evergreen Health Accessibility Audit and Remedies
I led the accessibility audit and remediation for Evergreen Health, ensuring their Western New York patient base can navigate the site seamlessly via screen readers, keyboard navigation, and other assistive technologies. The result is that the website now meets WCAG AA criteria.
Audit & Remediation Workflow
I utilize a hybrid testing methodology to ensure comprehensive compliance.
1. Automated Tests
Axe DevTools & Deque University Scans: Used to identify high-level issues such as missing ARIA labels, color contrast failures, and broken heading hierarchies.
accessiBe Scans: Utilized as a secondary check to identify common UI patterns that fail accessibility benchmarks.
2. Manual Testing & Screen Reader Validation Because automated tools only catch a portion of accessibility issues, I performed manual testing:
Keyboard Navigation: Verified that every interactive element (links, buttons, forms) was accessible via Tab key, with visible focus indicators and logical tab order.
Screen reader testing:
- NVDA (Windows): Tested the experience for the most common Windows screen reader users.
- VoiceOver (Mac): Validated the site’s semantic structure and announcement clarity on macOS.
Constraints
- Maintaining the brand’s identity while ensuring it meets proper contrast levels: I adjusted the colors across the website to use the brand’s dark green instead of light green since it readily meets contrast levels.
- Limited access to manipulate code: Despite having limited access to manipulate the code, I was able to use CSS and Javascript to successfully implement the accessibility enhancements.
Professional Experience
While I do not hold a formal CPACC or WAS certification, my proficiency is grounded in real-world remediation across multiple high-stakes projects. I have previously collaborated with accessibility experts from Level Access to confirm compliance on past initiatives, bringing that same professional-grade rigor to the Evergreen Health audit.
